SI is full of predictions already, that this event will be the key to transforming the ME or largely irrelevant. Posters line up depending on their general predisposition about the wisdom of the US invasion in the first place.

Rather than rehash the exchanges and predictions that have already been hashed to death elsewhere, some prefer to watch what happens now. I know firsthand how limited and ultimately unsuccessful our nationbbuilding effort was in Bosnia. Postwar democratic development in divided societies is much, much more complex than the op-ed columnists would have us believe. The simple mantra "democracy good, bad guys bad" doesn't address the many thorny issues involved in building a real success.

Looking at what has been done and said instead of guessing about the future, I don't see any sign that the US is moving away from its unilateralist line for now. But that could very well change as the election season heats up and Bush needs to declare victory and get out.

The original passion for transforming the whole ME is alive and well only among a handful of disgruntled neocons who continue to snipe at Bush from the margins.

Don't be surprised if this entire drama turns out to be much less than meets the eye. But that view is guaranteed to piss off the cheerleaders, so why start down that same road of snipe and countersnipe here.

Regards.

rruff - Saddam did not attack us. We were told he
was a real threat - and this has been proven to be
a lie.
The timing of his find is also questionable I think - 2
weeks after the Bush photo op with the fake Turkey?
Seems a little too cute.

Remember this tyrant - was our great friend under Reagan
in 1988 - after he gassed the Kurds. We didn't give a damn
about that then when it served our purposes.

I think they may overplay this here - if they are not careful - as they have been doing for sometime now.
