Many on the "left" have written extensively on the denial of rights to Japanese Americans - I'm not aware of many on the right who decry these abuses. Having argued since my arrival on SI that their internment was unconstitutional and a blot on our great country (and having been supported in my argument by other "leftists"), it is obvious to me that someone who says all leftists (or even a majority) think FDR is a "God", and that because they think FDR is a God leftists think the internment of the Japanese was a good thing, is engaging in gross generalizations, and building straw men. FDR made good decisions, and bad ones- most leftists know that, and most rational people of the right, know that the left is not monolithic, just as rational people of the left know that the right is not. Of course rationality is in short supply on SI- but it does exist elsewhere.

KH,
Padilla is being held illegally from a criminal justice point of view as were the Japanese americans. With Padilla we believe he was about to do something awful. With 99.9% of japanese americans who were interred, there was no such fear. All i am looking for is those on deanies on the left to recognize this before they go tearing into bush/ashcraft. I happen to be a big FDR fan but recognize the internment as one of the low points of his admin. I do recognize that racism was a far bigger problem back then and out west it manifested itself in ant-asian, and anti-japanese sentiments. Perhaps not apples and apples but not apples and oranges either--more like apples and pears. Mike
