Kailish: First and foremost I don't give a rat's *ss about the rest of the world's perspective. Our foreign policy needs to be based on what is best for America. Nonethless, I think the policy is best for the world in general. We have ignored the radical islamic fundamentalist movement for too long. It is and has been apparant that the overthrow of secular govts or govts in middle east friendly to the west is one of their goals, to say nothing of the many planned and at least two successful attacks at the world trade center on American soil. It is essential t that we have bases in the Middle East from which we can project power in the region. I also do not agree with your assessment that the actions of US has turned Iraq into a hot bed of violence that will spill over into Saudi Arabia. While every American life lost in Iraq is precious and important, the fact is more people are murdered in America or killed in auto accidents than are killed in Iraq. While it may be true that that some of the islamic fundamentalists are involved in the hostilities, do you really think that if they were not engaged in Iraq, they would be home making rugs? Have you considered that they may be over here fighting us? I would suggest that it is better to fight over there than over here. I don't think we have had a severe disruption of oil supplies as evidenced by the fact that oil prices have remained relatively stable. What we have is a shortage of refining capacity. It is true that there were those who said we would be welcomed with roses and there were others who said the republican guard would savage our military. The fact is many pundits expressed many opinions. I for one never believed this would be a cake walk and as I recall it Pres. Bush has said many times that this (war on terrorism) will be a long and hard battle and that it has just begun. Your reference to the German occupation of Sudatenland and Austria by Hitler, is frankly, offensive to me. I don't think the people of western europe and for that matter of eastern europe felt that we were trying to subjugate them and they have greatly benefited by the blood and treasure we have spent to help them. The comparison of our country and its current leaders to Nazis and to Hitler seems to be the current vogue among liberals who have nothing to offer by way of a solution to the terrorist problem but name calling. You may be right that "stability" is unlikely to be history's verdict but the fact is the area is, has been and is likely to remain unstable as long as the radical fundamentalists persist in their lunacy.
