I attempted to perform a clean boot in Windows Millennium Edition but one of the boxes had not been disabled (Load startup group items) It said I would need assistence from the manufacturer if one of the boxes remained checked in msconfig.

More freezing problems with Word....

My wife has a Dell inspiron 4000 purchased almost 3 yrs ago running Windows ME in a docking station setup.

All of a sudden, it just started freezing up each time either Word or a word document was launched. The thing is it says that there is a resource problem and insufficient memory to run. However XL runs fine, various graphics pgms run when launched and audio players etc all work. It only stumbles on Word.

However I had already turned off all background programs as a matter of course, so there was no anti-virus, no realplayer, and no miscellaneous apps running to my knowledge.

When checking systems resources, the CPU is doing nothing at all, but when Word is launched, it zooms to 100%, peaks down after the error message about resources comes up, and then when I say ok to close it, the CPU usage zooms back up to 100% and the program locks. Only way out is to turn off power, as CntlAltDel does not get any response.

I am about to proceed with the uninstall, clean-boot, and reinstall procedure recommended from the Microsoft link provided, but before I go and mess about, is there anything else that I should be doing. That was for word 2000and I have the works 2001 suite.

Other issues...The DVD/CD reader in the laptop is not working, and I have to plug in an HP CD 8200 unit by USB to have the ability to read install CD's. I have a rescue floppy made up and have put in a floppy drive in the bay of the DVD/CD and that allows me to boot into DOS if somehow I screw up theWindows files on the hard disk, but I am a little concerned about rendering my machine unusable with a blunder.

I have already run scandisk and repaired some areas, and also have done a complete defrag. Remaining disk space is at least 5 giga. The machine has 128meg of SDRam (2DIMMS), running on a pentiumIII 700MHz processor.

The Word program is part of the Works 2001 Suite.

Voila, that is the situation, and any comments are appreciated.

Thanks, fB
