Do people really think that this will help to change a gay or lesbian person's sexual orientation?

nope.

nor do i think that is the real issue

and it seems to me that it is the homosexual community that is demanding governmental involvement by insisting that government sanction gay marriage

<<Other than to facilitate the legal issues that arise when one or more persons enter a partnership>>

This issue is Pandora's box. If we don't say no here then where do we? How do we? If we view marriage as just a legal partnership we're headed for trouble. When I turn 60 I'll divorce my wife, marry a parrot (they only live about 100 years) to make sure my family can suck social security dry for another 85 years after my death.

Like you Jorj, I don't care who people do in their bedrooms - it's none of my business. OTOH, I do fear the ramifications (both social and financial) if we allow gay marriage.
