Last night john loftus said that the israeli raid on the pal bank had traced the funds from iran to syria to hizbollah to suicide bomber familiies and organizations that do them. Loftus predicted that the israelis would be at war with hizbollah in the spring. At the same time the US will be on the syrian border giving the syrians the incentive to do a libya.
My question is whether you agree and what the israelis and or the US will do about iran, now that the true colors of that regime are obvious even to the europeans. mike

You could have a "war" on the flu- and it would make a bit more sense given the mortality rate. I mean if you want to be proactive, and you want to respond to threats, all Karen is saying ( and me too ) is that you should respond proportionally. Sure fear is effective to motivate people- but it frequently motivates them to do stupid things, like panic. In a wilderness emergency your biggest danger is panic (fear)- same in other emergency situations, imo. Logically attacking problems that face us with a clear eye to how they affect us is much better than using the double edged sword of fear, unless you are a demagogue- fear really is a good tool for a demagogue, and there is not better substitute.

That's like reminding me after a murder that lots of people die naturally each year. It's not the same.

No, just as reminding people after a plane crash that many more die in car accidents is not the same. Viscerally. Rationally, OTOH, plane travel is demonstrably safer.

Yes, I know, you can't talk people out of feeling fear. But, dammit, we shouldn't be trying to talk them into it.

Fear is effective motivator. Name a substitute.

Fear is not a motivator. Fear moves, when it doesn't paralyze. Fear doesn't motivate. Different concepts. Fear does more harm than good except in immediate physical challenges. Lotsa studies out there on this. Fear, our immediate reaction to falling towers, has already done all the good it's going to do in this matter. Way past time to move on to the more constructive.
