Al Qaeda had bases in Sudan.

Under pressure, the nation-state of Sudan expelled Al Qaeda.

Would we be better off if Sudan had been bombed and occupied into even more of a disaster than it is now? I doubt anyone after 9/11 had the luxury of negotiating too long with the Taliban, but considering the performance leading up to the next war I wonder if there was even a serious effort to get Al Qaeda without a war.

Gosh Ted, I don't know...I am just not sure you can slice the bologna this thin.

We have no choice. This can't be about ideology or any other considerations. It is a war but its not your daddy's war. Its war that requires different tactics for different enemies. You can take out a Saddam or a Taliban with shock and awe but you can't an OBL.

These were pretty nasty people, not so unlike AQ, who gave sanctuary to AQ and probably contributed to the ranks of AQ.

Al, who cares? You're singing to the choir. Its not important.

I don't care about how the serial killer's father beat him when he was growing up and how sick his little brain is except if it will help me catch him. What I want to know is what is the best way to do that.

I am not sure we have the luxury of psychoanalyzing them before we bomb the $hit out of them, after a 9/11 event and ample warnings to cooperate. I definitely agree that Iraq took the eye of the US off the ball, if that is the point. I may be missing some subtle other point here...

You're thinking black and white. Its imperative we start seeing the distinctions between these groups......not the differences between their ideologies or religious beliefs or cultural morals but rather the differences between their MOs....how they operate. When they are work above ground and are visible like Saddam and the Taliban, you can use shock and awe. For those 'below ground', you have to hunt them one guy at a time.......more with mercenaries rather than standard military.

You heard of the cold blooded killer who lets no distractions get in his way..........IMO that is the attitude we must take with terrorists. Go after them like a cougar tracks and kills a gazelle......one terrorist at a time.

To echo JF, I'm not attacking you.......I do like you. <g>
