Yes, indeed, you're very lucky that the barn didn't set the house on fire. Amazing how the heat from one burning building can cause another to burst into flames. About 15 years ago, I was out in the yard and thought I could see a flickering flame at the kitchen window of our neighbour's farmhouse. I watched for just a few seconds, then ran to call the fire department (and yep, we're all volunteer in my area too). By the time I got off the phone and ran back outside, the flames were coming through the roof and second floor windows. The first fire truck got there fairly soon, as well as neighbours from other farms. Even at that, the heat from the house set the barns on fire -- and they were pretty far away. The barn burnt to the ground. What's weirder though, is that there was a hay baler sitting way out in the hay field away from the barn and it had a couple of bales in it... you know, the ones that are stuck inside your hay baler after you finish doing a field if you don't physically push them out). Well, after the barn went on fire, a few minutes later, the bales in the baler started to smoke and went on fire and that spread into the stubble and set the fields on fire. What an inferno around that place. A dog that was tied up in the yard went on fire just like the hay bales. Scary to see how this kind of thing happens and gives you some appreciation for just how dangerous fire can be.

On the bright side you'll have the greenest yard in the area in a couple of weeks. I work at a nature project that we burn off one of the fields when the weather is right and it's amazing how fast it greens up after the fire.

Do you know what started the fire?
