"The truth is that we are at war not so much with "terror" in general as with its incarnation which threatens us presently - namely, the extremist Islam. Not - I repeat - not with Islam in general, but with the latest incarnation of its extremist interpretation."

Do you think we can wage war with the extremists muslims without drawing the regular muslims into the battle?

Seems like an all-or-nothing deal to me, I doubt the run-of-the-mill shiite will feel unconcerned because we are only killing those shiites who we, in our discretion, have determined to be extremists.

I agree. We must align ourselves with non-extremist islam but recognize that some of these folks wouldnt be dinner guests either. Sistani comes to mind as a man we must deal with in iraq to get to a stable situation. We cant just go with the kurds and secular democratic sunnis or the returned exiles. Sistani seems to say he wants separation of church and state in an islamic state that respects the rights of its multi-ethnic and shia and sunni components. Its not George Washington but its not the Ayotolla Khomeni either. Sistani can help clean up the Sadr brigades while giving us cover to destroy the falujan/baathist/jihadists combo in the triangle. Also the Iranians and Syrians and Hizbolla should be made to pay a price for their continued support of these terrorists in both south and triangle. Mike

<<I don't believe that people all over the world would be unable to distinguish between "Islam" and "Extremist militant Islam". Those who would pretend not to understand would be be liars. Most moderate Muslims would see that we are for real, and that we are on their side - since they would suffer the most in case extremists manage to become their rulers.>>>

It is the leaders of the Muslim countries who can recognize the problem of not having done enough to control the radical elements. The ME Press keeps painting the US as the bad guys so the natives are rather confused.

Saudi Arabia came around real fast, from buying-off the terrorists to taking drastic action. Turkey was hit hard but seems to have things somewhat under control.

In Afghanistan and Iraq, the Taliban and the Baaths were themselves the radical elements by our measure of civil rights or oppression. Rooting them out became a big probem which continues.

Other than Iraq and Afghanistan, haven't things been rather quiet in the ME ?

Iran, Syria, SA, Jordan, Kuwait, Algeria not making any threatening moves of late.? Perhaps our actions are making a contribution to ME peace and stability in the oil producing areana.

Last night, GWB said this about the terrorists, among other things: >>>>>>None of these acts is the work of a religion; all are the work of a fanatical, political ideology. The servants of this ideology seek tyranny in the Middle East and beyond. They seek to oppress and persecute women. They seek the death of Jews and Christians, and every Muslim who desires peace over theocratic terror. They seek to intimidate America into panic and retreat, and to set free nations against each other. And they seek weapons of mass destruction, to blackmail and murder on a massive scale. <<<<<<<<

We are in Iraq - to a large extent - because (imo) we do not trust the Muslim world to be able to reign in their own extremists. I think if Bush and Co would stop using "politically correct" definitions, they would have a much easier time explaining their actions.

Nicely put..
