Face it.. Several key members of the UNSC went to extraordinary lengths to prevent the security council from voting to enforce 17 different binding resolutions against Iraq. And I think the oil for food scandal now makes it pretty clear as to why...

You argument works for me, Hawk.

It's very clear why, and yet, that doesn't make this war the correct choice for action, nor does it make a good outcome any more likely.

What should we do? Well, it's too late for most of the stuff we should have done, planning-wise, but we certainly should not put Bathist generals in charge of Iraq (those here who care desperately about human rights should be a teensy bit concerned about the Bathist generals, who probably participated in human rights abuses, being put in control Iraq). Of course it won't be the first time we helped put Bathists in control-

Now, on to the "we should just pull in our horns"- a very pretty statement, but not one I've ever made about Islamic militancy. Just because I do not agree with you, does not mean I think we should do nothing. I am of the "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" school of diplomacy. So no, you are not understanding me correctly. I would have left Iraq alone, and concentrated on propping up and making connections with moderate Muslims the world over (rather than working hard to alienate them, as we seem to be doing now- have you seen the poll numbers coming our of Indonesia? ) We are not winning their hearts and minds, and if you are really worried about Islamic militancy, I hope you don't expect the course we are on to suppress it in any way. I would also be concentrating on terrorist activity in Africa, and be much more proactive about shoring up international banking procedures wrt tracing terrorist money.

I am a utilitarian, and quite frankly at the moment I don't see much utility in what the US is doing, in fact, I see a lot of anti-utility. That does not mean I would do nothing, but I would do things much differently. Of course now we are looking for our "Peace with Honor"- gosh I remember that speech well. I can't wait to hear the speech we get about Iraq.
