Sullivan is despondent

Everybody go read FDR's speech: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

This panic is unseemly. We need more mental toughness to fight this war. We have a problem in Abu Ghraib that we need to fix and be seen to fix. But the opinions we should be worrying about come from two countries: America and Iraq. The other Arabs will seethe and hurl accusations, just as they will gloat the next time some insurgents burn Americans alive. It's what they do and we're not going to change it anytime soon. It is curious, that Sullivan sounds more upset than most of the Iraqi bloggers, except the ones who hated us from the beginning like Riverbend. Of course, Iraqis know that most of the guys on the receiving end in Abu Ghraib were Saddam's thugs, a little factoid that our media has managed to miss.

I am despondent, too. Not because of Abu Ghraib, but because of all the allegedly moral people whose only outrage is at bad publicity for our side.

I dismissed this as facile Bush-bashing at the time. I was wrong.

This closed-minded polarization that we are experiencing is as great a threat to us as terrorism, IMO, maybe a greater one.

Bill,
If this had all happened under a democrat, this thread would be going wild. Last week i said rummy must go, now dare i say Bush may have to go. Kerry is moving to the center slowly but surely. By the time of the dem convention he will be a viable alternative for most independents. And what is bush doing--holding show trials of privates in baghdad? Last chance for these guys in the next few weeks. They need a win somewhere in iraq. Less violence, shiaa control of al sadr, back to normal in falujah, agreement on the govt for 6/30. But even if all this goes well, this admin still might not be able to survive Abu Gihraib. Sullivan is right and many dems who questioned the competence of this admin are correct too. Ask Chuck Hagel, Colin Powell and John McCain among other or will some on this thread now demonize them too. mike
PS Bush did a wonderful job on the economy and on the WOT in Afganistan. Iraq didnt have to turn out this way at all but it did because of poor planning and war on the cheap. Now its broken down further in scandal and mismanagement. The WOT was too important to allow this to happen but no one is held accountable besides a 90lb private in the reserves.
