Why is it that "conservatives" are always so appalled when someone actually speaks their mind and holds opinions different than their own?

It's less surprising that "conservatives" (note the root word, conserve) would exhibit that behavior than it is that "liberals" (root word liber, free) do. And they do, in particular when it is suggested that their socially- and economically-redistributive policies are actually quite totalitarian, from 'progressive' taxation to affirmative action to socialized medicine.

Suddenly, they with a penchant for whining about inclusiveness and open-mindedness act surprisingly, well, conservative. Curious, isn't it?
