AMD notebook wins still weak and woeful

Computex 2004 This line is an afterthought

By Mike Magee in Taipei: Wednesday 02 June 2004, 07:40

THE AMD press conference here yesterday demonstrated how the chip firm is still lagging far behind Intel in persuading original design manufacturers (ODMs) to adopt its technology for notebooks.
While AMD was able to muster considerable support yesterday for its desktop processors with an impressive wall of boards on display, and some servers from IBM, Sun and HP.

But AMD was only showing off four notebooks using its processors – and these were small fry, with all respect to the small fries designing these machines.

The reasons for AMD lagging so far behind Intel is not so much to do with technology and while it’s true that Chipzilla has far more to spend on marketing than its smaller competitor, that excuse is wearing a little thin.

The truth is that AMD is spending far too little time on its range of notebooks which appears to hang off its X86 product line much as a pair of undarned socks hanging off a washing line might cause amusement to neighbours in a well off area.

While AMD’s Opteron has been a runaway success, and its Athlon 64 chips for desktops seem to be doing relatively well too, its lack of notebook wins must be a worry for senior management, particularly as Intel continues to consolidate its lead with the Centrino branding initiative.

I applaud the aggressive stances being taken by Calpers and other large funds towards transparency and the stockholders rights as owners vs execs as employees.

I don't. A little late in the game for them to finally get their heads of of their arses and start considering more seriously the fact that they are fiduciary custodians for over a million people. Very few had the muscle they did to be a catalyst of change. WHAT TOOK SO LONG?????

You can fight the current for only so long before drowning.....someone needs to clue Barrett in to this.

The current is definitely in favor of expensing.....and thankfully that is not about to change anytime soon.

Robert, revenue gets recognized after acceptance of performance, not before, right? Regards, Amy J
