Iran know that using nukes against Israel would be suicidal. They must have another reason for wanting them.

I think if the choice is between Iran with Nukes, and going to war with Iran, we go to war.

It’s going to be a hard sell, especially if the information is coming from the same people who cried wolf in Iraq. One of my fears in the Iraq war, from the beginning, was that if we burned our political will fighting a non-essential war, we might find ourselves unable to fight an essential one down the line.

I hope it doesn’t come to war. On the basis of size and terrain alone, occupying Iran would make Iraq look like a children’s party. Defeating the Iranian armed forces would not be a problem. They probably wouldn’t even fight conventional battles; they know from the Iraqi example that they can do far more damage by going underground and attacking static occupation forces.

The commitment of force would be enormous, and extended, and we would have no help from anyone.

For sure, Israel would be wiped out.

I’m not sure of that at all. Israel has nukes and would certainly retaliate, and the people pulling the strings in Iran would much rather have somebody else doing the martyrdom. The great virtue of a nuke, for a country like Iran or North Korea, is as a deterrent and as a symbol.

It would be unfortunate, to say the least, if an American army were to be sent into the field to protect Israel.

I remember discussing, on SI, how an American invasion of Iraq would affect Iran. I guess now we know. They don’t seem to have gone all meek and mild, as the hawk brigade expected. The opposition to the mullahs doesn’t seem to have had a sudden rush of boldness, either.
