To stay in the same spot would have been gross negligence, since, as Rassmann and others on Kerry's (and Thurlow's) boat attested, there was enemy fire. Kerry's boat when up the river, turned around, and returned.

lol. I guess all the other boats including PCF-3 and those rescuing those on PCF-3 were "negligent" rather than courageous because their skippers did not order that turn and run. They stayed and rescued PCF-3. When the enemy fire disippated, then and only then did Kerry come back. Rassman was under fire which confirms his account. Rassman however was not under fire during the pickup. The VC ambushed and split.

Kerry and Rassmann destroyed the rice cache by digging a whole in the middle and throwing in grenades. Although that would not destroy the entire store, it would do considerable damage. It was the best they could do with what they had.

Nonsense.
If they wanted to destroy the rice,
All they had to do was throw the rice in the river.

Have you ever thrown a grenade? It is a measly 1/4 lb of tnt and blows shrapnel 5-10 meters. It might scatter 20 pounds of rice, but all you have to do is pick it up again. You couldn't destroy a 50 lb bag of rice with a case of grenades.

These mines were remotely detonated. The VC would have their guns and rockets aimed at the site of the mine. It was standard practice to get out of the 'kill zone'. To stay in the same spot would have been gross negligence,

It was a near ambush. Immediate Action (IA) SOP for a near ambush is to assault immediately.
4 boats did just that.
Guess which one did not.
