One problem that I see in our future operations is that we start off with massive opposition from the NGO's. They have a systemic bias against globalizaton. And they don't want to work with out military.

The NGOs are in a new environement, where the terrorists see them as unwanted globalization, and will blow them up accordingly. They can whine about it being the US' fault all they like, this is not going away.

We won the "war," but bungled the "peace." I can't argue with that. I can argue that is was institutional. Our military does not have a "sys admin" to handle the situation. I think we will in the future. DOD is very good at "lesson's learned."

Winning the war is a military function. It is projecting diplomacy with combat power. We are very good at projecting military power to win battles abroad.

Managing the peace is not a military function. Managing peace is purely political. We are very good at maintaining peace at home.

It is very important to keep the two separated. Politicians have no place on a battlefield. Combat troops have no place in managing peace.

We know that. The "POSSE COMITATUS ACT" (18 USC 1385) prevents us from using our troops to maintain the peace here at home except when specifically authorized by Congress. We must extend that thinking abroad.

I agree we won the war. But, the question is "knowing what we know now, did we have to go to war and/or did we have a better way to achieve our objectives?".

I don't have a problem with Bush making a mistake. Everybody makes mistakes. That is how we learn and become better people.

I am willing to bet that Bush could win re-election more easily by saying we made a mistake in going to war. I listened to the wrong people. I will not make the same mistake again

Anybody who has already decided on Bush will not change their minds. But IMO he would pick up a lot of the undecided.

I am also willing to bet that Karl Rove will not allow him to say that he made a mistake.
