Kerry's sister: U.S. endangers Australia

Roy Eccleston, Washington correspondent
September 18, 2004
theaustralian.news.com.au

JOHN Kerry's campaign has warned Australians that the Howard Government's support for the US in Iraq has made them a bigger target for international terrorists.

Diana Kerry, younger sister of the Democrat presidential candidate, told The Weekend Australian that the Bali bombing and the recent attack on the Australian embassy in Jakarta clearly showed the danger to Australians had increased.

"Australia has kept faith with the US and we are endangering the Australians now by this wanton disregard for international law and multilateral channels," she said, referring to the invasion of Iraq.

Asked if she believed the terrorist threat to Australians was now greater because of the support for Republican George W. Bush, Ms Kerry said: "The most recent attack was on the Australian embassy in Jakarta -- I would have to say that."

Ms Kerry, who taught school in Indonesia for 15 years until 2000, is heading a campaign called Americans Overseas for Kerry which aims to secure the votes of Americans abroad -- including the more than 100,000 living in Australia.

In the 2000 election, analysts say absentee votes cast overseas tipped the balance to Mr Bush in the decisive state of Florida. Domestic votes put Mr Gore ahead by a few hundred votes, but Mr Bush won by 537 after overseas ballots were included.

In this election, which is decided according to the states won, the Kerry campaign says overseas votes could also determine the result given there are a dozen states where victory might be measured by a few hundred to a few thousand votes. About 5million American voters live overseas and interest in this election was high, Ms Kerry said. About 350,000 absentee ballots were distributed in 2000, but more than a million had been sought this time.

"My belief is US citizens living overseas are very concerned about the current direction of the US, particularly in regard to international affairs," she claimed. "They are on the front lines of the decline of US respect and reputation; they hear it and feel it on a daily basis."

A poll by the Washington-based Pew Centre for People and the Press found that in March this year only 58 per cent of Britons, 37 per cent of French and 38 per cent of Germans had favourable opinions of America, down by more than 20 percentage points in each country from before the Iraq war.

Quizzed on US opinion polls that showed Senator Kerry's campaign flagged through August and that he was now running behind Mr Bush, Ms Kerry said her brother would win the November 2 election.

"He responds well to challenges and has the reputation of fighting well from behind," she said.

Kerry Campaign Attempts To Destabilize Australian Partnership

captainsquartersblog.com

September 19, 2004

In a move that should shock both American and Australian voters, John Kerry's campaign has sent Kerry's sister Diana down under to tell Australians that their American alliance makes them less safe:

So much for "building alliances"! Kerry has now acted to undermine a critical relationship in the war on terror just to score some electoral points. A failure on John Howard's part to be re-elected would certainly give Kerry ammunition to attack George Bush on his standing overseas. However, with Howard running ahead of the pack in Australia, Kerry sent his little sister to attempt to influence the Australian election -- which, if reversed, would have Americans screaming bloody murder.

Besides, it's a ludicrous charge. The al-Qaeda Bali bombing that killed more than 200 people, mostly Australians, came in October 2002, well before the invasion of Iraq. Diana Kerry isn't competent enough to read a calendar; Australians are smarter than that.

Does John Kerry care more about grabbing power than he does about the United States? It certainly appears that way. Who gave the order for Diana Kerry to interfere with the Australian election? Who told her to act in a manner that is calculated to undermine the American-Australian partnership on the terror war? Frankly, not only should this disqualify him for the presidency, it should disqualify anyone involved in his campaign from ever holding public office. Those who condone this interference in a wartime alliance must be punished at the polls, and their party as a whole should be blocked from any power whatsoever until they atone for their actions.

This effort makes clear that John Kerry does not understand, or care, about the dangers facing the US and the democracies in the 21st century. His personal ambitions trump national security -- a disgusting and craven quality that will repulse Americans in November. It appears to be the only consistent theme in Kerry's public life, from his fraudulent 1971 Senate testimony all the way to his serial vacillations on the war on terror during this campaign.

Australians should also take note of the desperation and the greed for power on the left. If you believe that Islamofascists never targeted Australians or the West before the invasion of Iraq, then you should heed Diana Kerry's provocations. Those Australians who are literate and have memories that go back beyond last month will come to different conclusions.

'Hanoi John' Kerry lied and betrayed

If Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry and the Democrats have their way, he will soon take a solemn oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. He will swear to defend the citizens of the United States against our enemies.

Unfortunately, an oath from such a man is worth nothing, I believe.

I also feel his oath as an officer of the U.S. Naval Reserve meant nothing to Sen. Kerry when he met with representatives of our enemies, the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong, in Paris in 1970 as part of a delegation from Vietnam Veterans Against the War. He should have been brought up on charges then for his betrayal. Political ambition triumphed and he somehow escaped retribution.

I believe his oath and his loyalty to his fellow soldiers meant nothing to Sen. Kerry when he testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1971. Under oath, he repeated the contrived and unsubstantiated "Winter Soldier" testimony claiming extensive and organized American atrocities against the Vietnamese. That these false assertions were eventually discredited did not ameliorate the harm this propaganda did to our POWs and other soldiers.

No matter. Sen. Kerry's political ambitions were assuaged.

And, again, as he disavowed whatever personal heroism he may have once displayed when he threw his medals or ribbons at the U.S. Capitol. Or when he joined the infamous leftist pantheon of Jane Fonda, Tom Hayden, Ramsey Clark and others in what I believe to be traitorous actions against the United States. In this he once again provided tremendous aid and comfort to our deadliest enemies and, I believe, derived political benefit at the cost of the security and well-being of the country.

I believe it is no exaggeration to say that Sen. Kerry is forsworn, that Sen. Kerry has lied and betrayed the American fighting man, that Sen. Kerry is an unapologetic traitor. I think "Hanoi John," the darling of the brutal North Vietnamese communist propagandists, should take his place by the side of Benedict Arnold. Both were men fabled for their personal bravery, but fatally flawed enemies of our country.

In presenting such a candidate to uphold their banner, the Democrats have displayed poor judgment and a contempt for the American electorate. This contempt is most directly aimed at the U.S. military, expected to swear loyalty to a commander in chief who had damaged them grievously through many years.

If the gambit succeeds, they will bring destruction upon the country and upon themselves. Of course, if the country allows this to take place, the country richly deserves the pain that will ensue.
