Rather tries to blame his boss.

Todays NYT inside story on Rathergate led with the appointment of the panel. Halfway down is the hottest Rathergate item since the Mapes/Lockhart contact surfaced:
In an interview on Monday, Mr. Rather said that on learning that Ms. Mapes had obtained the documents, he called Mr. Heyward.

"This is not verbatim," Mr. Rather recalled. "But I said: 'Andrew, if true, it's breakthrough stuff. But I need to do something unusual. It may even be
unique. I have to ask you to oversee, in a hands-on way, the handling of this story, because this is potentially the kind of thing that will cause great controversy.'

"He got it. He immediately agreed.''

I have family in Austin.

It's wild.

The City Council is wild.

An only slightly harder-working Texas version of New Orleans without near as much history, architecture, good food or, sadly, authenticity.

Used to be fun, in a dated '60ish kind of way, until about 1982. The hipsters are desperately trying (and failing) to re-create the Austin Scene.

A caricature of its former self, in other words.

Politically, it's all about competitive liberalism, i.e., people competing hard to see who can be more liberal than his neighbor.

Travis County is a fat, dissolute old man/lady living off dreams of a long gone youth, thumbing its nose at lean, mean conservative Dallas and Houston, while belching tired old liberal cliches and wondering where the next ice-cold six-pack of Shiner Bock and a Jamaican herb filled self-rolled cigarette will come from. Maybe the next "Save Willie from the IRS" fest will supply them.

Yeah, I can easily see Travis County as the source of RAthERgate. Cooked up at a midnight skinny dip at one of the local lakes which was liberally supplied with plenty of chemicals, thus explaining the stupid technological mistakes.
