In the US there are people who see the military as a way to receive benefits, but who did not expect to be sent to war.

That would make them as "absurd" as most of your posts then.....

If they are too idiotic to see that they are liable to be sent to war, why are they allowed to serve? One would have to be moronic not to know that troops have been deployed in various "hot" situations since the end of the Vietnam War.

"It seems unlikely that many people decide to be firemen and then find to their surprise that they are expected to fight fires."

There is ONE and only one purpose for the establishment of a military. That is to advance or maintain political objectives via violent enforcement.

"In the US there are people who see the military as a way to receive benefits, but who did not expect to be sent to war."

Ya got ta be kidding...

NO ONE should be allowed to enlist into the military without understanding specifically what they are committing themselves to upon enlistment.

That's a crackup:

Officer: Soldier be prepared to move out at 0800. We are preparing to deploy you to XXXX. Any questions?

Soldier: Yes sir, I only signed up for the benefits. Could I just go bowling instead?

Surprise: Warriers ARE expected to fight when employed by the military.

but to mount misguided wars, people have been forced into the military

Who's been forced in to the military? People who have been called up are in the military reserves, at lest in active reserves. They signed up for the military and signed on to the condition that they could be called up for active duty.

In the US there are people who see the military as a way to receive benefits, but who did not expect to be sent to war.

Signing up for the military includes signing up for being in the position where you can be called up and sent to war. The purpose of the military is to fight wars (or to deter them but it deters them through its ability to fight them, it wouldn't be much of a deterrence without that ability). If you don't want to be in the position to be called up, then don't join the military. People who do join the military should not be surprised that they are called on to perform the mission of the military any more than people who decide to be firemen should be surprised that they are called on to fight fires.

The government did not force them to sign the contracts. Calling up reserve forces is not a draft, backdoor or otherwise.
