I'm in Scotland at the moment, where I've been living with my family since the summer- and the press here about Bush is remarkably bad. I'm for Kerry 100%- but then I think I'd vote for one of those little hobbit creatures they just found in Indonesia, rather than for Bush :-) We're off the day after tomorrow for Paris and London- which should be a great deal of fun. I hope life has been treating you well. I marched in the peace marches in SF, and I always wondered if you were there too. You might be interested in this- I wrote it to someone else, but it occured to me you might find it interesting. I'll be back in the states toward the end of November, but I'll be trying to check in while I'm on the road to keep in touch by computer with some of my family and friends, so I may be able to peek in here, and say "hi". ........... There is an especially good program on BBC 2 called The Power of Nightmares- which traces the Neocon scare and mislead tactics through the 70's and into the present day- always looking for a new face of "evil" those folks. First it was the evil empire (crumbling under it's own weight)- but even though the USSR essentially imploded, the Neocons took it as "proof" that their use of American might worked- in essence, they bought their own myth that the USSR was powerful in it's last days- and by buying their own myth, they've managed to justify all kinds of things, including the demonization of Clinton (which I'm sure you've seen on SI), and now the demonization of the Islamicists, who interestingly enough are doing the same thing in the ME, demonizing the US. May whatever powers there be save us from the extremists, and get us back to pragmatic people (like Kissinger and Clinton, and even papa Bush) who didn't want a crusade, but merely wanted to enhance world stability. The Power of nightmares traces both the evolution of Neocon power, and the evolution of violent Islamicist power- a fascinating program, replete with book citations, and copious (COPIOUS) facts. I'm taking notes, and then following up on them at the library. It's been fascinating.
