I agree with your perceptive analysis completely.

We need to build re-usable heavy lift capability FIRST (dropping the cost of lifting a pound into orbit by at least a factor of 10) before we embark upon anymore 'feel good', but WASTEFUL, 'show missions'.

NASA has a tentative 2020 schedule for a manned landing on Mars. The bottom line is that my generation is a failure and disappointment when it comes to space exploration. We couldn't even build a decent atom smasher.
