Peter, why is Nazi equals leftist was I always taught that the reason Hitler came to power or ONE of the reasons was his Resistance to the Socialists who were threatening to take over Germany .Remember Germany was on hard times. There was rampart unemployment,the mood of the Country, Germans a proud people was down and the stand Hitler took in subduing the leftists was one big reason for his popularity. Also he appealed to the Nationalistic spirit and he blamed a lot of the economic problems on a scape goat, the Jews.. Check out your concept that Nazi equals leftist. It was just the opposite I fear. Stalin was in charge of Russia and everyone was worried about communism too.. It's when fear sets in that one group rallies and subdues another. Too easy an explanation however, think of a line and on the left are the leftists. Then there is the fulcrum and on the right the Conservatives. A nice balance is desirable( fulcrum being moderates) but often when things go wrong and fear overtakes human beings they SWING and when the left swings it goes around and becomes the RIGHT. Juxtaposition as it were. This is how I learned it in Social Studies..
