This is how things used to be> Medical science has come a long way from Dr. Jonas Salk, who during the worldwide polio epidemic of the 1950s discovered a vaccine that saved thousands of lives. In 1955, the legendary CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow asked Salk who owned the patent on the vaccine. Taken aback by the question, Salk hesitated momentarily before answering,

"Well, the people I would say. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?"

Something smells odd about that research. The article says that half of the medical bankruptcies had $11,000 in out of pocket expenses. Now, if $11,000 is going to cause you to file bankruptcy, look in the mirror before blaming the medical/insurance/legal industry. Now, if your medical problems keep you from working, on top of the $11,000, I can see bankruptcy being a possibility, but the medical costs are only a contributing factor.

That is EXACTLY why we need Universal Health Insurance
Coverage. The same coverage provided to all citizens of every
other major country that we compete with. Not just in the Euro Zone (those Socialists, LOL, right) Canada, Japan, they know that there is a bare minimum of human decency and civilization in an advanced society.

They don't have people begging for their child's cancer treatment bills like we do here - what a spectacle - and it is because we have not done the right thing to insure everyone.

JMHO,

I think it's just great that the President and congress are so anxious to protect the big moneycenter banks from all those deadbeat, laid off furniture plant and textile workers. And how about all those scheming computer programmers whose jobs have been outsourced to Bangalore? Citi, BankAmerica, Wachovia and Chase just can't be dealing with all these bankruptcies. They might have to cut back on their campaign contributions, for heaven's sake...
Perhaps the Credit Card banks should be required to add a black box warning: What's in YOUR wallet? Warning: It might include lifelong debt.
