Joe, maybe defense is 1/3 of our "discretionary" budget. Of course, that all depends on what your definition of "discretionary" is. ;-)

Sorry, I don't have a link, but it's pretty clear to me that defense is NOT 1/3 of our budget.

It is not now, but it used to be that high, and before that, it was as high as 1/2 of the federal budget.

In this light of this , the idea that the federal budget deficit is caused by this ever shrinking portion of it sounds laughable. Yet, it is one of the urban myth that liberals are required to believe, and we have been hearing this from them for decades.


It may not be half the budget but its by far the biggest line item.......it exceeds the next largest item by nearly 200%. In other words, defense is a money hog. I think its time to overhaul it as opposed to SS.

I don't buy the myth, I just point out that if we need to cut, we COULD cut there.
