JF, thanks. "Mandatory" spending includes pretty much every single social program out there, while "discretionary" includes all of defense spending.

I guess in those terms, it's a lot easier to disband the military than it is to stop social spending. Which, come to think of it, would suit a lot of lefties just fine.

Thanks for the link which confirms what I posted. Defense was $52.6B in 1962 of the $106.8B total outlays, which is nearly 50% of the total.

During the period of 1962 and 2004, defense shrunk from 9.3% of GDP to 3.9%.
