Peak oil production should be a wakeup call. Before I got into computers, I studied geology. There I developed some appreciation for what is involved and how common the structures are that produce oil. Pretty much anywhere that has or has had a river dumping sediment into an ocean for a long time at some historical point in the past can produce oil and gas. At some point, though, the easy to get to stuff (and the stuff of sufficiently low sulfur content) gets pumped. Especially when no other resource is being developed. At best it is a great transition technology. I think it has served its purpose. I've always maintained that oil is too valuable to burn. Plastics and lubricants are a fraction of the usage of oil. Most is just converted to C02. I remember seeing the statistic for how much carbon has been freed from these trapped deposits. It was something like several feet, spread over the surface of the Earth. Yikes.

About the ticket... I sure hope what you say is not the case. The Democrats better realize that they have more to offer than a place for people of color to hide from the man. The Republicans have found a cynical niche. The evangelical Christians have been their meal ticket. Catholicism is hemorrhaging membership to evangelical protestant movements which means the booming Hispanic vote is more and more likely to associate itself with the dogma of the Republicans. I don't see any reversal because Hispanic culture values hard work and generally not education. The aw-shucks persona of the President works well to attract them. Eastern polished intellectualism doesn't.
