Elmer, nice to see you agreeing with me. Despite saying it's a silly argument you now acknowledge that X3 will provide much less of a boost in performance for 8MB Potomac than it provides for 1MB Cranford. Besides this (as Doug keeps saying but was not my point) Potomac runs at quite a bit lower frequency than 1MB Xeons, which will also have influence on the deminishing performance increase when comparing the between X3 + 1 MB Cranford, and X3 + 8MB Potomac. Actually it's likely that Potomac will close to not be used in combineation with X3 because of this.

4 socket dual core Opteron HP 585 will outperform IBM 4-way X3 + Xeon when both are newly released, and by a large margin.

Regards,

Rink

PS, above post is edited. Changed 'Nocona' to 'Cranford'. Tx Doug.

Is this costly IBM chipset that delivers an 8% performance boost over 4 socket gluless Opteron's designed for the dual core Xeon's when they come out in Q1 2006 or will that take more re-designs?

Those Xeon's are not going to be socket compatible or is that one of the surprises that you refer to?

TIA
