Mish I find that answer to me quite offensive. Frankly I would not eat shoe leather like round steak. I eat a lot of food other than meat BTW.

Well, I don't know about 1968, but I have been buying all the food for my family for the past 10 years, and the increases during the last year have been by far the largest I have seen. Yes, there are some bargains on sale, and yes, food in America is still relatively cheap, but my grocery bills are up well over 10% from a year ago, and I do not shop like a moron. /BSG

<<People eating Filet Mignons probably do not give a rats ass what it cost.>>

Oh, I don't know....I eat it a lot, and I care, but I'm stupid like that....

Over the long run food inflation has not been bad, but over the last 18 mos it's definitely accelerated, especially milk, cheese, butter, some produce (lettuce) and beef. Coffee is way up. Still, I get bottom round roasts (for Patron's succulent pot roast) for 1.99 on sale, that's not horrible.

The key of course is to take advantage the supermarket when they run specials, and have adequate storage and freezing capacity to keep what you've loaded up on. That's nothing new.

OTOH, there is NO question that the price of gasoline, heating oil, drugs 'n health care, education and houses is rising at an accelerated pace.

If what you say is true regarding the non rise of food prices, perhaps the "Food" part of the disclaimer "Excluding Food & Energy" should be dropped from CPI reports. It is included there for a reason and my guess it is there to under report inflation not to overstate it as you imply.

processed foods have gone up a lot. But no one forces you to buy TV dinners instead of cooking

Americans eat a lot more processed food than they used to. also dine out (fast food) much more as opposed to the TV dinners of yore. part of the reason obesity is becoming the norm. if you want to get grossed out, read "Fast Food Nation".
