"Reagan didn't defeat the Soviet Union"

Actually, he didn't. They did that to themselves.

Revisionist history.

Same thing you'll be doing 20 years from now with regard to Bush and the Middle East.

"Bush had nothing to with bringing democracy to the Middle East. Arafat died. That's what did it. And the assassination in Lebanon, that's what caused Syria to pull out. And Iran, they were on the way already. So what were Egypt and the Saudis to do?"

Leadership matters. What Reagan and Bush have that Clinton didn't have is leadership. The willingness to take a massively unpopular position because it is the right position to take.

Should this turn out like it may -- i.e., near-total democracy throughout the Mideast (which will, long-term, have the effect of greatly reducing anti-Americanism and the the threat of terror attacks here), Bush will be lauded as one of the few greatest presidents in our history. This will be a tough pill for the Left to swallow, but it will be indisputable -- revisionism or not.
