Gee, I thought the reason there were thousands of Palestinians in Lebanon (during their Civil War), was because the Jordanians kicked the PLO out of Jordan (though Jordan allowed most Palestinians to stay in Jordan, as Jordan is I believe majority Palestinian) - for trying to overthrow the King.

Let's face it, Democracy is messy. We don't know what will happen in Lebanon, or Iraq, or Syria, or Egypt. That doesn't mean that we should discourage democratic movements in the region - or the removal of Syrians from Lebanon. The French are Democracy attempted to undermine American initiatives in foreign policy since Wilson's 14 Points. Yet, a democratic (though cool - to Americans) France is preferred over a stable Vichy government.

We tried the route of encouraging "stability" in the Middle East. The reason that Saddam (a man responsible for starting a war that killed over a million people) wasn't removed in 1991, was that America's allies wanted to keep a "stable" government in Iraq.

Look at it this way, 87 years ago (4 score and seven), President Wilson told the world that occupied and colonized people had the right of self determination. He specifically mentioned East Europe, the former states that made up the Austrian/Hungarian Empire, Eastern Europe and Poland, and the former Arab territories controlled by the Turks. The United States is merely following up on a 87 year promise made by the President of the United States (who was undercut by Republicans, the British and the French).

p.s. a former Presidential Chief of Staff (and a Republican) was of Lebanese heritage, as is the General in command of the U.S. Central Command.
