I thought the French women were just exquisite (and so many Americans are SOOOOOO overweight- I mean, really, seriously, hugely, grossly overweight- and you just don't see that in France)- but I agree with you about everything else.

Well, that French standard of living is because they accept paying a lot more taxes than Americans, in return for maintaining a middle class society with a real safety net. I would much prefer that sort of system here. With unemployment so high, and the work week lengthened, it will be interesting to see how much all of that erodes.

Not very many people know that the median income in America, in real terms, has not changed in 27 years. This is really abominable--we have totally stalled out. At the same time, our wines have been getting delicious, particularly in California and the Pacific Northwest, and we are eating a wider variety of foods prepared more interestingly, at least at the restaurant level.

I would like to know what percentage of Frenchwomen maintain their weight by smoking cigarettes.
