Mistake No. 1: Having the pipe in plain view.

Mistake No. 2: Consenting to a search of the car (although if the pipe was in plain view, the cop likely could have easily gotten a warrant if consent was not given).

The guy should have politely refused the request, which would have put it on the cop's shoulders to decide how interested he was in detaining the guy until he could get a warrant. My bet is that he would have let the guy go on his way.

It's insane, but why did the sports shop owner persist in his self-defeating beahvior when he knew the possible consequences?
