BBC NEWS: Shot man 'unconnected' to bombing

A man shot dead by police as part of the inquiry into Thursday's attempted bomb attacks was unconnected to the incidents, police have confirmed.

A Scotland Yard statement said the shooting was a "tragedy" which was regretted by the Metropolitan Police.

The man was shot dead after police followed him from a south London flat to Stockwell Tube station on Friday.

Two other men have been arrested and are being questioned after bombers targeted three Tube trains and a bus.

guy was down on the ground and he was shot five times in the head. something wrong with this one. i expect it is officers not trained with weapons like our police working with guns everyday.

a man wearing a heavily padded coat in the middle of summer who runs away from officers into a mass transit system immediately after a bombing event is without question a potential suicide bomber, imo it would have been negligent not to take him down, not to so could have cause a maximum amount of casualties

it takes a split second to detonate a bomb

certainly it was regrettable, but the man who gave chase to the officers caused this event

bottom line over reaction by cops.

I agree with the police on this one. The only sure way to keep him from setting off a bomb was to kill him. It had to be a head shot to keep from hitting any explosives. The number of shots is a normal reaction in this situation. It sounds out of line to us, but most police do discharge multiple shots when they shoot.

The guy was a known associate of suicide bombers, already under surveillance. He ran away from the cops and leapt over the turnstiles into the subway, wearing a heavily padded coat on a warm day in July.

Do you chance that he is wearing a bomb belt (why else the coat?), or do you shoot him in the head first?

The costs of chancing it are too high. So you shoot. Down on the ground means nothing, if he's wired to blow.
