I agree. Universalism is the way to go. My favorite Sufi poem is:

Just as light is both a separate entity on its own but also a part of fire
every particle of this universe is both on its own and part of God


Universality of being is also supported on a scientific level. Our ecosystem is interconnected. Pollution in one part of the world washes up in another part. Or even more basic, Avogadro's number is so huge, that a statistics professor of mine once showed every material, no matter how small, ends up in every other material (he concluded it with a gross statement about how each of us contains bodily fluids of everyone else...I guess that is one way to announce "brotherhood of man").

The bottom line, Jesus, or Buddha, or ... were not founders of a "Church". They brought ideas for betterment of mankind. Later these ideas were implemented in the form of various religions. But interpretations are always imperfect as I can readily demonstrate by asking people what the simple statement "Grand Central station in NY is the largest in the world".
