That is just plain wrong. The presence of a government safety net makes it likely to be abused. The solution is to abolish the welfare system. Would that be acceptable? Otherwise we must live with the distortions caused by it and attempt to correct the problems we encounter. Why just focus on the safety net? The problem is that the workers cannot earn enough to pay for the cost of their families within our society. They must either work more hours/day, get paid more $/hr, or have lower living expenses. BTW, in this case due to higher family size, one of the biggest "subsides" is actually education. Were I live, it costs an average of about $6K/yr for K-12 education. With 4 kids, that is 24K/yr. The two parents earn at best about $25K/yr assuming reasonably constant employment for both, which is by no means certain for them. So the Ag community imports labor willing to work at minimum wage, then the county increases the tax rate on the entire community to pay for the increased educational costs the community must bare. Yet most farmers would scream bloody murder at the though of raising minimum wage and will maintain they themselves deplore welfare. The dynamics at play in this situation very nicely highlight ideological lines that Dems & Reps posture over. "Living wage", and "welfare state". But who is getting the welfare?

New Americans must become Americans, not Asians, Latin Americans, or Arabs who just happen to live in (name a city). Exactly correct. If the new immigrants who come here don't want to assimilate, then this isn't the country for them. There are other countries that don't offer what America does, but then, that's their choice. No where on earth can any individual go into another country, plop his gear down, and say, "I'm here to exploit the riches of your country for myself, and I'm going to start by changing your country to fit the patterns of the land I left behind".... America IS America because we are a Nation of LEGAL immigrants (with the exception of the last two decades), and hopefully, that we will continue to live under one flag, one set of laws, and hopefully, one language as our National language. We celebrate our cultures, and origins, and ancestors, as well as our children, and the future of our Country.
