The things you are saying are noble but It doesn't seem rational to me that we should bankrupt ourselves for some greater good that no one else recognizes or appreciates. Once bankrupt, there will be little enough that we can do for ourselves much less anyone else.

i fully understand and accept that as the remaining superpower that we have the responsibility to act unilaterally if threatened (basically that is what you are implying when you say as "clear front runners" we model the stand)

but it is not our responsibility to foot the bill with manpower and resources to protect those countries perfectly capable of defending themselves...

especially true, imo, when it comes to conventional forces
