John,

Horowitz'' success with state legislatures has nothing do with the any sort of problem in the academy; has to do with the rise of the right in politics and it's lack of tolerance for opposing points of view.

Any number of studies show a dramatic 90%+ liberal slant in Universities. Speech code is a left/liberal creation - not right wing and you are discussing the rights lack of tolerance?

Now I am not for quota's - we should have History and English Faculty hired on merit, but how would you feel about University profs discussing the need to rid the world of Arabs? You seem to tolerate anti-semitism quite well.

John

There isn't any "opposing POV" in your end of academia, John. It's a matter of "left" and "far left." This call for hiring of diverse POV's and reining in of Profs who spend their class time ranting about Bush isn't a "right wing plot." It is a groundswell from students who are tired of it, and Pols who are responding to it.

Combine this with the out of control costs of college, caused by the influx of student loans, and you have a situation coming to a head that will cause reform. Pipes is a minor part of it.

On the ME dept problem, do you you remember Tekboy talking about Michael Doran? He is the only moderate ME Prof Tek knew of. He is at Princeton. He is brilliant, and is having a tenure fight because he is not pro-Palestinian. Tek mentioned that he was going to have problems. You go nowhere in ME academia unless you agree with Said.
