So many libertarians and conservatives seem to be quite proud of the belief system you espouse

Well, that may be because they are believers in the Constitution. Our founding "fathers" were determined to prevent a tyrannical central government and went to great lengths to limit, and balance, the federal role. They were quite specific in enumerating the limited perogatives of the federal branch while reserving all other rights to the states.

You seem to envision a wholly different kind of country, one modeled more on the example, say, of Russia -- a country where central government is all powerful.

It is surely your right to believe in that vision and even to work to see it come about.

I must observe, though, that I believe you would be among the first to cite the sanctity of our Constitution when the issue at hand makes that authority desirable.

I wish someone would explain it to me.

Grainne, that would require you to become familiar with the literature of economics, and how that literature relates to history.

You, and the plurality (majority?) you represent, won't. That is part of the reason why children yet unborn will not realize their full potential.
