For many evacuees, it may be the best thing that ever happened to them. Massachusetts spent millions to refurbish quarters at Otis Air Force Base, down to TVs and laptops with Internet access in every room. There will be medical facilities, a movie theatre, canteen, pet care, recreational facilities, etc. Donations pouring in include free tuition at private schools. Counselors are on hand to provide help with permanent housing, jobs, and schools. The first 200 to fly in were greeted by crowds of well-wishers with a standing "O" for each, hugs, and personal escorts. Otis is prepared for 2,000 more.

It may be the luck of the draw where evacuees are sent, but no doubt many other cities and states are being equally welcoming and generous.

Is Baker a Republican or Democrat, E? Do you think he was sincere about his longstanding desire to clean up public housing in New Orleans? That is sure one callous and insensitive remark, no matter what he said later.

So nice to see you here? Did you notice that Christopher Hitchens interview I posted last week where he seemed to be a wee bit more rational than usual lately?

I wonder what his IQ is. I think he is a tremendously brilliant thinker, and was so perplexed when he went over to the other side. What do you think motivated that?
