Politics has always been a nasty business. What I think has intensified is the polarization of the American public.

I don't know exactly when it started, but you're right. The political discourse in this country is almost entirely without substance. Look at the way we talk to each other on this board. "Dims" "Repugnicans" "lefty loser" "Right Wingnut"

I am guilty of it myself. We no longer have objective criteria to judge the value of a peice of legislation. It almost always comes down to us against them. There are some things that democrats do that I don't like or agree with. Same with the reps. I am weighted more towards the dems, but wil vote republican in several local elections this year.

In my memory, and I'm not trying to point fingers, but it seemed to take a turn for the worse with Ken Starr and all the money and time spent trying to find something on Clinton and all that was found was a BJ. It took focus away from policy and made it personal.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to Find that Tom Delay, while no saint, is probably not guilty in this case.

Yeesh. Spare me the whine.

Imagine the indignant gasket you would be blowing if Delay was a Democrat.

The sleeze is swirling around the guy. Ever heard of the expression "wheres theres smoke theres fire"??

So true. In 1963, John Kennedy and Barry Goldwater, the presumed nominees for the 1964 elections, reportedly talked of touring the country together to present their respective viewpoints to the people. Imagine that happening today.

IMHO, the low came with Kenneth Starr's multi-year $100 million investigation of President Clinton and the resulting impeachment proceedings. Starr was charged with investigating and clarifying Whitewater, then kept going and going and going...

Clinton was foolish, and was more foolish for lying to conceal an embarrassing personal affair that, in itself, was not a crime. The Clinton case was an exercise in absurdity, proving that, as in the DeLay case, a prosecutor with an unlimited budget and time could probably find cause to indict anyone, including Mother Theresa.

What strikes me immediately is how NASTY politics has become, this is a NEW LEVEL. EVEN if he were guilty, which seems unlikely based upon what I am hearing on several talk shows, this CRIME is NOT EVEN A CRIME except in 19 states. Yet, if you listen to the Nancy Pelosi types you would think he murdered her firstborn child. jdn

DeLay has certainly been a major factor is causing politics to become so nasty.
