I am meeting more and more similar-aged civilians who admit they regret not serving.

I believe basic was great experience, serving in national guard was terrible. most of the people there were incompetent, good old boy ranking, and just about everyone in my unit was there because of the draft. no way would they have joined the army. They joined to get out of vietnam. they had no interest in serving, did very little to contribute, other than show up.

None would take sp5 position as it required one extra night a month for education, and planning (nco meeting). Those who were nco's were in it for the extra money , some of these men were making more in national meetings than in regular jobs. To them it was the income.

I expect a lot of problem now in recruiting reserves is the same thing as back in early 60's. you can get folks into these units who believe they can pick up a few bucks and a night out with the boys. oops girls too now. However, since getting called up for active duty is for real they are looking to other places for additional income.

Military retiree COLA has been announced as 4.1%, effective January.

You and I both got 4.1%. The average worker is getting 2.4%. We are being overpaid.
