>> and there are still a few small government types around

This is a common problem of the Dems. By the numbers one can show that GOP is a far bigger spender than DNC. The battle of the two is not about shall we have big government or small government. That framing was a nice trap into which Dems seem to be happy to walk into. The fight is about should the government give 80% of the funds to the big corporations and 20% to the people (this is known as "big government" or "Left" in the US)...or should it give a 110% to the big corporations and perhaps may be after a lot of bragging and dragging it through the mud also give 5-10% back to the people (this is the GOP and "small" or "Right" platform).

Whereas the real platform should be a minimalistic government that equally avoids overspending big business as on the people and simply allows everyone to do what they want barring fraud and imposition of their will on others.

This of course is not going to fly in the US because unless a politician is willing to sell of the country to the big business, he will not have a chance in the elections.

I like small government as well, I don't have a problem with people having guns, I believe in the separation of church and state for both their sakes, I believe in a safety net and the reduction of risks for all citizens, I believe in a measure of protectionism from countries that do not have our standard of living, I believe in regulated capitalism, progressive taxation, public education, the UN, civil lawsuits, privacy, civil unions for all, vote by mail, 100% publicly funded campaigns and progress in all things at all times.

Aside from greed, corporate corruption, permanent indebtedness to foreigners, permanent war, loyalty over competence, lying, one-party rule....what do Republicans stand for?

No wonder they have to 30,000 hours of propaganda radio every week in ordr to sell themselves. Who would want them otherwise?

I see a lot of (maybe former) Republicans saying what I've been saying for years - "a pox on BOTH their houses!" We get Tweedledum and Tweedledee here - no REAL choice at all. The ONLY Dem I see publicly for pulling the troops out is Russ Feingold. What's the difference?

If they're in Washington, they aren't in the world you or I live in. They're courted by lobbyists, feted by special interests and us citizens can just suck eggs until the next election.
