I disagree. Our advanced civilization has no reason to be clubbing seal babies. They're barbarian and awful. And of course it will have an effect. The balance of nature will be knocked off. Either the seals or their predators will suffer. And rich people don't need seal fur jackets. It ought to be illegal along with whaling and the rest of the 19th century type trafficking. They used to say the ocean would never run out of fish. Guess what? It is.

The most important tech we need is new cleaner fuels to replace gas, oil and coal. What big oil is afraid of it that we'll develop something we don't need them for, something we can make at home. That's why the timber industry got hemp criminalized, why big oil got rid of public transport in places like LA and why the drug companies give money to keep marijuana illegal. They was us reliant on them do they can gouge us.
