Culture...among other factors...and it's not accurate to say that everyone surrendered, although it's clear that the islamic fundamentalism problem has considerably different attributes than those of post WW2 defeated nations.

Because Asians, due to their Confucian indoctrination, have an inordinate respect and subordination to authority. Once the Japanese emperor surrendered, the entire population capitulated like a beaten dog turning it's belly to it's attacker.
