I see your points Grace. But the character and morals of the people is in a slow slide downhill made worse by the squeezing out of the middle class and gotta have it all today US consumerism.

Seems like most here on this thread have an abundance of free time that our agriculturally employed ancestors could only dream about, so in what way is the quality of life going down? A job working in front of a computer is somehow worse than working every day in a rolling mill?

You make a good point we have a lot of people living the good life - but lots of people are getting fatter, more cholesterol - eating too many doughnuts and smoking too much crack rock - in a society where that was not as easy to obtain - they were healthier - as I said before - my grandpa lived to 90 - several of his sons with a more technologically advanced world died in their 60's - a couple I think because thier family imploded and the stress from it - some because they ate too good and didn't get enough physical exercise. You say empower the individual - let everyone else die - if we know people are going to be weak in ways very bad for them and we can structure society to remove certain temptation or bad things - why not do so? Its like LES just posting on no child left behind - why send more money to corporate CEO's and richies with tax breaks when that money would be better spent on poor young childrens education and support.
