My view of Iraq is simpler:

1) Saddam was actively plotting with Zarqwari to kill Americans and had training bases in northern iraq that had to be eliminated.

2) Chemical Ali was plotting to kill us in other more sinister ways.

3) the US needed a forward base to deal with the percolating Iranian nuclear threat.

With these things accomplished, the US need now only maintain their bases, continue to build Iraqi army and national guard, and then shift the focus to Syria and Iran and Hezbollah, and not necessarily in that order,

Iraq reminds me of Vietnam with one difference: whereas the Russians and Chinese were supplying arms to the North Vietnamese, the Russians and Chinese are not helping the Iraqi rebels with armaments and materiel.

It was hard for the Americans to tell friend from foe in Vietnam and worse, many a South Vietnamese was a two-timer. Ditto in Iraq, I believe!

It seems to me the US has got to find an honourable way out of Iraq, Vietnam style or even better!

History is replete with many instances of countries engaging in civil wars before they got down to the serious business of nation-building. Maybe a civil war is necessary in Iraq...................................... Just my opinion only.

The trouble with the US is that it is too involved with its business of always coming out on top of every other country forever, so much so that she is viewed with suspicion and distrust by many countries and, in turn the US becomes paranoid! BTW, it is believed that Bush is a nicey and naive sort of guy, but unfortunately he is being manipulated big-time..............

Failure is not an option. Iraq already is a beacon for the muslim forces of darkness. If the US could find a way to chemically trace all people currently in Iraq, it could prove useful in the future. Civil libertarians might object.

Effective border control anywhere usually amounts to an Iron Curtain style barrier. It is expensive to build and expensive to staff. It is not clear that there is a good working answer to the need to prevent entry by criminals.
