I was talking to the wife of a good friend -- a family that is very active in a very large church (mainstream Christian church -- nothing ultra fundamentalist fwiw) and I brought up something negative about Bush, the War in Iraq, deficits, the dollar etc... The words that came out of her mouth next -- literally astounded me. She proceeded to tell me that -- "we had to invade Iraq after they bomded the Twin Towers....we had no choice. I asked her - what she meant (specifically) by "they" ? She said -- "Iraq... Iraq sent those terrorists into America and hijacked those planes....etc" I then stopped her and asked her once again - specifically: are you telling me that the 911 Hijackers on those planes came from Iraq... were Iraqi's and sent by Saddam Hussein ? Her deadpanned answer without pause was: "Yes, Yes and Yes... of course...that's why we had to attack Iraq." I was stupified... But, wait -- it get's better. I asked her if her Church, the Pastor, or their Bible study groups discussed the War with Iraq, Terrorism, 911 etc ? She answered: "Well, yes... of course." I asked her if it was the impression of the rest of her Church that -- Iraq had attacked us and that's why we went to War etc. Again, she deadpanned answered with the affirmative....and looked at me, like I was "nuts" for even asking ? This is an affluent, well-educated, white-collar, suburbanite church....and I am not exaggerating here... I can guarantee you that if you independantly polled 1,000 members of that congregation about Iraq... 90%+ of them would say the same thing. Bush played the "born-again Christian" and "Anti-Abortion" card...and their ears shut down after that... He can literally do - no wrong in their eye's. It's "them" -- against "the world." There's also a strange anger...and an odd rationalization about their entire mindset. I'm a Christian... went to church every Sunday for much of my life... haven't lately...and am evidently -- completely out of touch. ...I regularly watch Joel Osteen, or Robert Schuller on Television, but that didn't prepare me for what the mindset is -- amongst the masses. Bush could hand over every US Airport to the Red Chinese Army tomorrow....and as long as he fights "Abortion" and plays the "Born Again" Card.... he's got their vote. ...it's onward christian soldiers....over the cliff and into the abyss. -- I mean no disrespect, but that's really how it is -- with a huge voting block in America. They are uninformed to the point of being totally ignorant...and the they will tune anything and everything else out... as long as "someone" (it doesn't have to be Bush -- it could be anyone) tells them what they want to hear vis a vis the "Abortion" issue and plays the "Christianity Card." ....it's like talking to zombies. It really, really stunned me.
