I think people in the US have a hard time understanding what would make the US poorer because they really don't understand what made us rich in the first place. What is good and bad is that they haven't needed to know in order to benefit. People in the US are awash in stuff, floating on a sea of goods and services yet they don't feel particularly wealthy and they didn't work that hard for all this stuff they own so they conclude that it has to be a mirage, an illusion, some sort of financial sleight of hand.
