You know why Escalante had a movie made about him? He was unusual. Are you under the impression you can have armies of Excalantes? Not going to happen.

It would be nice if teachers, unlike other professionals, were all going to be excellent, but like all other professions, there will be a curve- and teachers will run from excellent to mediocre- just like accountants, and engineers, and Walmart employees.

Brining up Jaime is like saying "Why can't all basketball players be like Shaq?" A lot of it simply comes down to talent, and when it comes to talent, it's usually in short supply. Mediocre is what you find most, in every profession.

L.A. barrio teacher Jaime Escalante did not have that problem when he helped his disadvantaged students to learn Calculus.

Good movie. But policy should not be made on the exceptional instance.
