I believe every President up to Kennedy was a Mason. For most of the history of this country, if you wanted to have any influence in your community you had to be a Mason. There's book begging to be written - how did the most influential organization in the country become a joke in one generation.

I looked through my stuff and I found a Mason Medal passed down from my father it could have been his fathers, looks like it is brass and has a compass (those pointy things for making circles) and a square with a big G in the middle. I guess construction is an honorable profession after all contrary to the Balding actors ideas.

My husband is a Mason. He says they go back at least as far as a trade guild for the men who built the cathedrals in the medieval era. They figured out how to build cathedrals really tall and big without falling down, and kept their secrets so they could make a decent living. This is one reason the Catholic Church got pissed off against them, being independent and holding out for higher wages unstead of doing it "for the glory of God."

There are claims that the guild goes all the way back to Solomon's Temple but there's no evidence that I am aware of.

Not that anybody would tell me. They don't allow women to join the Masons.
